Por decisi\u00f3n propia, me un\u00ed a la Iglesia Metodista Unida hace treinta y seis a\u00f1os, en 1986. Como otros de mi \u00e9poca, hab\u00eda dejado otra tradici\u00f3n religiosa (m\u00e1s fundamentalista) cuando me fui a la universidad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pens\u00e9 que estar\u00eda bien sin la Iglesia. Estaba mal informado.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diez a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, a la edad de veintiocho a\u00f1os, volv\u00ed a una congregaci\u00f3n metodista unida buscando encontrar ese \"algo\" que me faltaba. Me recibieron con los brazos abiertos y una cari\u00f1osa bienvenida. Cuando este pr\u00f3digo regres\u00f3, hice votos para \"sostener a la Iglesia Metodista Unida con mis oraciones, mi presencia, mis dones y mi servicio\". Y lo dije en serio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mi decisi\u00f3n no fue precipitada ni ligera. Hab\u00eda visitado otras iglesias y tradiciones religiosas. El \u00e9nfasis metodista unido en la gracia combinado con el alcance tangible y real que presenci\u00e9 en la tradici\u00f3n metodista unida marc\u00f3 la diferencia. La iglesia a la que me un\u00ed (Mulberry Street en Macon, GA) ofrec\u00eda un almuerzo diario y un ministerio de ropa a las personas sin hogar en el centro de la ciudad. Fe en acci\u00f3n. La Iglesia Metodista Unida siempre ha representado -para m\u00ed- esta mezcla \u00fanica de teolog\u00eda pr\u00e1ctica que no se limita a hablar de ser cristiano, sino que expresa nuestra fe cristiana de forma palpable en el mundo.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En estos \u00faltimos treinta y seis a\u00f1os, he formado parte de ocho congregaciones o cargos diferentes.  Soy lo que se conoce como un \"pastor de segunda carrera\". (Esto significa que trabaj\u00e9 en el mundo de los negocios durante veinte a\u00f1os antes de entrar en el ministerio). He experimentado lo que significa ser maestro de Escuela Dominical, Presidente de los Hombres Metodistas Unidos, L\u00edder Laico, Instructor de Confirmaci\u00f3n, Presidente de Personal-Parroquia, Pastor Asociado, Pastor y ahora, Superintendente de Distrito. La Iglesia Metodista Unida desempe\u00f1\u00f3 un papel importante en la formaci\u00f3n de mis hijos como los adultos responsables en que se han convertido. La Iglesia ha sostenido mi matrimonio. La Iglesia ha sido mi familia mientras me mudaba de un lugar a otro. Me ha apoyado emocionalmente en la p\u00e9rdida de mis padres. Esta Iglesia Metodista Unida me ha apoyado de todas las formas imaginables.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Una lecci\u00f3n que aprend\u00ed muy pronto en mi carrera empresarial fue la siguiente: la lealtad importa. Si alguien te contrata para hacer un trabajo, s\u00e9 leal a esa persona. Han apostado por ti. Si te conf\u00edan un trabajo o una tarea, hazlo lo mejor que puedas. La confianza es un elemento esencial en las relaciones humanas. Cuando se rompe, no es f\u00e1cil recuperarla.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tengo la intenci\u00f3n de permanecer leal a la Iglesia Metodista Unida.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Este es un momento dif\u00edcil en nuestra Iglesia. Congregaciones enteras est\u00e1n optando por desafiliarse de la Iglesia Metodista Unida por cuestiones (aparentemente) relacionadas con la sexualidad humana. Hay mucho miedo y ansiedad. En mi opini\u00f3n, se est\u00e1 difundiendo mucha desinformaci\u00f3n y exageraci\u00f3n. Hay una postura general de \"anti-institucionalismo\" y las personas se han vuelto desconfiadas y c\u00ednicas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Si uno se lo permite, puede desanimarse f\u00e1cilmente.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Para m\u00ed, un ant\u00eddoto sencillo contra la desesperaci\u00f3n es recordar por qu\u00e9 soy metodista unida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El verano pasado, volv\u00edamos al oeste de Tennessee de visitar a nuestros nietos en la playa. Estaba ansioso por regresar a Tennessee Occidental y, al mismo tiempo, reacio. Sab\u00eda que tendr\u00eda que tratar con iglesias que hab\u00edan tomado la decisi\u00f3n de abandonar a la familia. Lane y yo conduc\u00edamos por Atlanta y escuchamos una entrevista en la radio WABE, la emisora p\u00fablica local.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Dr. Stephen Law es ginec\u00f3logo-obstetra en la zona de Atlanta. Estaba siendo entrevistado por su hija, la Dra. Karen Law. Stephen (el padre) contaba c\u00f3mo lleg\u00f3 a ser m\u00e9dico en Atlanta tras crecer en la pobreza en Indonesia. El padre de Stephen, cerrajero, era adicto al opio y la familia pasaba apuros. La comida y las necesidades b\u00e1sicas escaseaban.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Iglesia Metodista (antes de 1968) se encontr\u00f3 con un joven Stephen Law. Los misioneros se comprometieron con \u00e9l y le ayudaron,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0En palabras de Stephen,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>\"(La) ense\u00f1anza de la Iglesia me proporcion\u00f3 una gu\u00eda... los diez mandamientos, las historias de Jes\u00fas. Me ense\u00f1aron ingl\u00e9s\".\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephen acabar\u00eda asistiendo al Reinhardt College (una escuela metodista del norte de Georgia) y al Emory (otra instituci\u00f3n metodista) y se convertir\u00eda en m\u00e9dico.
