Photo by Tyler Sprouse.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By Tyler Sprouse, TWK Communications Specialist<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Methodists in the Tennessee-Western Kentucky (TWK) Conference are taking concrete, meaningful action in the pursuit of gun reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Sunday, August 6, at Calvary UMC in Nashville, the TWK Commission on Church &amp; Society hosted a discussion, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iuEQD754NUQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do No Harm: A Conversation about United Methodism and Gun Reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d featuring three panelists: Bishop William T. \u201cBill\u201d McAlilly, Rev. Ingrid McIntyre, and Rev. Keri Cress. Calvary UMC is just over a mile from The Covenant School which was traumatized by gun violence earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerned United Methodists and community members joined their voices to call for real change to be enacted in Tennessee. The group strongly supports the potential Governor\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/governor\/news\/2023\/5\/8\/gov--lee-announces-special-session-on-public-safety-to-begin-august-21.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Session on Public Safety and Constitutional Rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are currently experiencing an epidemic of gun violence in this country,\u201d said Bishop McAlilly, the Episcopal Leader of the TWK Conference. \u201cAs the people called \u2018Methodists,\u2019 working for gun reform is a vital part of our mission at this time and in this place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For folks living in Middle Tennessee, the gun violence epidemic hit home this year on March 27, when six people\u2013three adults and three nine year-old children\u2013were killed in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/03\/27\/1166268762\/nashville-school-shooting-covenant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mass shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Rev. Keri Cress, associate pastor of East End UMC and Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Volunteer Chaplain, was a first responder to the school shooting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThirteen of us [chaplains] answered the call to go to the emergency room at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children\u2019s Hospital at Vanderbilt,\u201d said Rev. Cress. \u201cI was in the room with the victims\u2019 families, and I had to deliver the news that is every parent\u2019s nightmare.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this moment of unspeakable grief and loss, she leaned upon God\u2019s Spirit to help the bereaved continue to breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were taking slow, deep breaths together,\u201d said Rev. Cress. \u201cWe prayed and held hands, we sobbed heavily and sat stunned. We held the families close and held space for God to comfort them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting, the cries of the ER were mixed and mingled with the cries of concerned citizens calling for change at the Tennessee State Capitol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur cries at the Capitol building echoed the cries of those families with whom I sat,\u201d Rev. Cress said. \u201cWhen we gathered outside the halls of power in the days after the shooting, we were crying and shouting and raging for a world that is safe and kind, one in which little children can safely grow up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the tragedy in March, our conference has been hard at work advocating for significant gun reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12433\" style=\"width: 784px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12433 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/twkumc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/DNH1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"784\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Concerned United Methodists gathered at Calvary UMC listen to Rev. Photo by Tyler Sprouse.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bishop McAlilly and the TWK Commission on Church and Society <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twkumc.org\/letters-gun-reform\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organized a letter writing campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, encouraging people to write their local, state, and federal representatives calling for the passage of gun reform legislation. Lay and clergy leaders have organized discussions, Bible studies, and informational teaching sessions around gun policies. Conference teams have joined with other organizations to plan and participate in an upcoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/action.forwardtn.org\/a\/surround-capital-prayer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Session Prayer Vigil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on August 21 at the State Capitol building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why he has taken such an outspoken stance on this issue, particularly given its polarizing nature, Bishop McAlilly appealed to ways this crisis has affected him personally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn December of 2003, my nephew was shot and killed in the line of duty as a Mississippi police officer,\u201d said the bishop. \u201cThat was so difficult for our family. And our conference was not only impacted by the shooting at The Covenant School. Last summer, we lost a dear sister in the faith, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twkumc.org\/remembering-rev-dr-autura-eason-williams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Rev. Dr. Autura-Eason Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at the hands of gun violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt makes no sense to me why we need automatic weapons in this country,\u201d he continued. \u201cI recognize everyone doesn\u2019t agree, but we have lost our way in this country. As United Methodists, we are called to work for the common good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the discussion, the panelists stressed this work\u2019s alignment with United Methodists\u2019 identity as followers of Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur denomination\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umcjustice.org\/who-we-are\/social-principles-and-resolutions\/our-call-to-end-gun-violence-3428\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Book of Resolutions calls on all United Methodists to work for gun reform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Rev. McIntyre. \u201cThis is consistent with who Jesus is and who he calls us to be. He spoke out prophetically against the powers of his day. We are called to do the same.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJesus calls us to \u2018love our neighbors as ourselves,\u2019\u201d said Rev. Cress. \u201cHow can I say I love my neighbor if I am unwilling to stand with them in this holy work?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the conclusion of the conversation, the panelists were asked how local UMC congregations can engage in this ongoing action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRight now, the best work churches can do is to show up,\u201d Rev. Cress reflected. \u201cContact your representatives, call Governor [Bill] Lee; use the resources we already have and prayerfully consider how best you can contribute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChurches can also check out other organizations that have been doing this work for a long time, such as \u2018Protect Kids Not Guns,\u2019 \u2018SMART,\u2019 and \u2018Awake TN,\u2019\u201d added Rev. McIntyre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conference local churches are hosting numerous events, such as the upcoming \u201cgun buy-back\u201d at Glencliff UMC in south Nashville, inspired by the words of the biblical prophet, Micah, who paints a vision of the coming reign of God\u2019s peace in which people will \u201cbeat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks\u201d (Micah 4:3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are calling the event, \u2018Swords Into Plowshares,\u2019\u201d said the Rev. Ingrid McIntyre, pastor at Glencliff UMC and long-time community organizer in Middle Tennessee. \u201cWe are going to literally melt down the guns people bring in and transform them into gardening tools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur local churches must form coalitions of the willing,\u201d said Bishop McAlilly. \u201cWe need courage and holy boldness in our congregations for the sake of the common good. If we want abundant life for ourselves, we must work to ensure that that is a reality for others.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bishop McAlilly emphasized that, alongside the prophetic work of speaking out, churches must engage in the slow work of relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to learn again how to stay in the room with difference,\u201d said the bishop. \u201cThis is hard, risky work.
