Job Description – Director of Student Ministries

It is anticipated that anyone employed within the structure of the local church recognizes that employment is not simply a vocation, but a response to God’s call to ministry on his or her life arising from the ministry entrusted to all baptized persons. The stated mission of the First United Methodist Church is “Glorifying God as we make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.”
The Director of Student Ministries is a newly created position. The expectation is to start as a Full-Time (30 hrs. per week) position with potential to grow to 40 hr. per week as the program grows. The Director of Student Ministries would report to the Senior Minister and the SPRC.
Salary: $32,000.00, plus a $2,500.00 annual allowance towards health care
Supervisory Responsibilities would include the following:
• Nursery Staff, Children’s Coordinator and Children’s and Youth Ministry volunteers
General Qualifications:
• Professing Christian in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ
• Positive role model in personal life
• Committed to continued personal, spiritual and educational growth
• Self-motivated and comfortable working without close supervision
• A call to ministry and spiritual gifts relevant to ministry in the areas of Youth and Children’s Ministries
• Excellent computer skills including proficiency with social media
• Specific skills in administration, communication, volunteer recruitment, training and organization
• Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate maturity in dealing with church staff, volunteers, parents and guardians
• The ideal candidate would have at least three(3) years of experience working with children and/or youth in a ministry setting, or equivalent experience
• Openness to and compliance with United Methodist doctrine is a requirement, and an existing knowledge of and familiarity with United Methodist Doctrine and Polity is a huge plus (www.umc.org/en/content/articles-of-religion and www.umc.org/en/content/confession-of-faith)
Specific Job requirements:
• Coordinate outreach ministry to grow youth participation, both in FUMCS and in the community at large, by promoting an environment where children and youth feel connected to each other as a church family while creating fun and meaningful opportunities to grow and learn
• Lead and organize effective children and youth programs implementing fellowship, worship, biblical teaching, discipleship and evangelism, including ministry and mission opportunities.
• Integrate children and youth ministry into all phases of church life to create a culture that is intentionally inter-generational
• Maintain regular communication with youth and parents using text, email, social media, etc.
• Support and encourage the children and youth in outside activities in which they are involved. Attend school and sporting events as possible and be their encourager
• Plan, develop and provide resources for Children’s Coordinator and volunteers for children and youth, including but not limited to:
1. Children’s and Youth Sunday School Classes
2. Nursery
3. Youth Bible Studies
4. Children’s Church
5. Children’s Moments during Worship time
• Recruit and Coordinate a Volunteer Pool to be called upon to assist with staffing Nursery, Children’s Ministries and Youth activities, including compliance with the FUMCS Safe Sanctuary Policies
• Prepare an annual Student Ministries budget for approval by Finance Committee
• Manage expenses according to the approved budget for Student Ministries
• Coordinate Children’s and Youth activities with the Church Administrator for scheduling in the Church calendar, communicating events to parents and guardians.
• Coordinate and supervise special programs throughout the year such as:
1. Vacation Bible School
2. Easter Egg Hunt
3. Trunk or Treat
• Embrace and comply with FUMCS Safe Sanctuary policies
• Assist with other pastoral duties as needed under the direction of the Senior Minister
