Glendale United Methodist Church is a growing congregation in Nashville, TN that is Justice-Seeking and Reconciling (LGBTQIA+ affirming). Glendale’s Music Director should strive for excellence in worship through collaborative and creative authenticity. Key responsibilities include playing the sanctuary piano during worship services and the planning/recruitment of additional music talent to enhance and diversify the virtual and in person worship experience at Glendale. Since music is an integral part of worship at Glendale, there will be opportunities for growth in this position – in prospective salary and in areas of responsibility – as Glendale continues to experience growth and new life. The right person for this position will be integral in helping us take worship to the next level in exciting ways that will help us continue reaching new people who are seeking a safe faith community to begin, restart and/or deepen their relationships with God.

Job Type: Permanent; Part-time
Work Hours: +/- 4 hours/week; One hour of worship per week plus preparation, possible rehearsals and occasional special seasonal services will be required.
Compensation: Up to $9,000/year (paid weekly)

Specific Responsibilities:
1. Play instrumental music for weekly worship service (Sundays @ 10am) and seasonal services including, but not limited to, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday.
2. Select and play music for preludes, communion, offertories and postludes unless specific music is requested.
3. Recruit and nurture talent, both vocal and instrumental, through paid and volunteer musicians including congregation members of all ages.
4. Monitor the condition and schedule routine maintenance of the church’s musical instruments and make recommendations to Leadership Team regarding their up-keep.
5. Have a strong commitment to Glendale’s mission of inclusion and justice.

Job Qualifications:
1. Experience and demonstrated excellence in piano performance.
2. Skilled ability in vocal performance, keyboard accompaniment and other instruments is highly desirable.
3. Experience in the performance and selection of church piano/organ and choral music, which represents a broad variety of musical periods, styles and cultural genres.
4. Affinity for working with other musicians and congregation members, including youth and children.
5. Appreciation of music as a part of worship and sensitivity to the inclusive style of worship of our community of faith.
6. United Methodist membership not required, but knowledge of United Methodist worship and structure would be helpful.
7. Must pass a background check.
