Position: Director of Worship & Music Ministry
Job Type: Part-Time, 6-10 hours/week
Reports to: Pastor for worship planning and day-to-day direction; accountable to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) for employment matters.
Works closely with: Lay leader, administrative assistant, and church administrative board
Coordinates: Choir and additional music and technology volunteers as applicable
Effective date / review cycle: March 1, 2026 / annual review by SPRC

Who We Are: Matthews Memorial UMC is a small missions-oriented church. Our church choir is small but mighty, and historically, our music ministry has been a bridge to greater connection with the Spirit. We are united in our warm welcome of visitors, our service in and beyond the local community, and our commitment to growing deeper in our love of God and others.
Our Goal: Matthews Memorial UMC is seeking to fill the part-time position Director of Worship & Music Ministry with the servant-hearted leader God is calling to partner with our local congregation.
Responsabilidades clave
A. Worship Planning & Leadership
● Partner with the pastor to plan worship services that integrate traditional and contemporary music appropriate to the congregation, aligned with lectionary/sermon themes and the liturgical calendar; support the congregation in spiritual growth through music and worship.
● Provide musical leadership for special services (e.g., Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter, Christmas Eve).
● Select music reflecting a breadth of styles (hymnody, spirituals, contemporary, gospel, etc.) while building the choir’s capability and congregation’s appreciation over time.
● Serve as primary music leader for the congregation, deepening the communal connection with God through music as the Spirit leads; vocally and instrumentally lead congregational worship in collaboration with the choir and/or organist or guest musicians.
● Participate in staff/leadership meetings as requested; communicate clearly and consistently with volunteers and staff.
B. Choir Development & Team Building
● Mentor and develop existing choir members; cultivate a spiritually healthy and musically prepared team. Ensure a worshipful and supportive choir environment.
● Recruit and welcome new choir members; cultivate a positive, worshipful, and spiritually formative culture within the choir.
● Lead weekly rehearsals, selecting music appropriate to choir skill levels; provide music resources (sheet music, playlists, YouTube links, etc.) in advance; teach vocal technique; encourage broad participation and develop emerging leaders within the choir.
C. Technology, Copyright, and Administration
● Maintain and organize choir music library; manage music acquisition within budget.
● Coordinate weekly with tech volunteers and administrative assistant on worship presentation elements (livestream/recording coordination, bulletin preparation, etc.).
● Preferred: Ability to assist with maintenance and improvement of worship-related AV needs in collaboration with staff and volunteers, within approved budgets.
Cualificaciones
● Demonstrated experience leading church music across multiple styles (traditional and contemporary), including choir leadership and congregational worship. ● Strong musical competency including vocal leadership, instrumental skills, and ability to teach parts effectively and lead rehearsals efficiently.
● Knowledge of or willingness to learn United Methodist theology and worship practice including liturgical planning, attention to diversity, and ability to serve across varied theological perspectives within a local congregation.
● Organized, collaborative, communicative; strong interpersonal skills; able to recruit, coach, and care for choir members and to work cooperatively with staff/lay leadership in humble pursuit of excellence.

● Mature Christian faith; commitment to lifelong spiritual growth in Christ; servant-leader character; supportive of the United Methodist tradition and local church mission.
Requisitos
● Availability for Sunday services and rehearsals; additional hours during major seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent/Holy Week, Easter).
● Must complete background screening per church policy.
Measures of Effectiveness
● Consistent, well-prepared, smooth Sunday service leadership that facilitates genuine worship; healthy choir culture focused on relational & spiritual growth; music ministry supports a life of discipleship; collaborative, humble partnership with staff and volunteers; timely communication and planning; compliance with copyright/licensing.
