On a Sunday afternoon in March, laughter, conversation, and shared purpose filled Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church as supporters gathered to celebrate a legacy more than 70 years in the making.
The Tennessee State University (TSU) Wesley Foundation hosted its Spring Gala and Silent Auction, “Legacy in Bloom: Celebrating 50 Years of Growing Young Leaders,” on March 22, 2026. More than 80 guests attended, helping raise over $17,000 to support the ministry’s work with students at TSU.
The afternoon unfolded with a silent auction and a shared meal, served by Wesley students themselves. As guests browsed auction items and settled into conversation, the heart of the ministry became visible not just in words, but in the students moving throughout the room. That heart has been present since the very beginning.
In 1955, during segregation, a group of leaders imagined something bold: a Wesley Foundation to serve students at Fisk University, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee A&I State University, now known as Tennessee State University. Their vision was to create a space where students could grow in faith, build meaningful relationships, and begin to understand their purpose.
The ministry took root through faith and perseverance. Early leaders witnessed its impact on students’ lives, while dedicated servants sustained it through seasons of limited resources, guided by commitment and calling.
As the Methodist Church moved toward integration in 1968, the Wesley Foundation became part of the unified legacy Tennessee Annual Conference, expanding its reach and strengthening its connections across Nashville.
That same spirit of connection was evident throughout the evening.
Student testimonials offered glimpses into lives shaped by the Wesley Foundation, while speakers, including Board Chair Dr. William Bowen and Campus Minister Rev. Dr. Amy Steele, reflected on both the ministry’s history and its future. The event itself was made possible by a dedicated team of board members and supporters who continue to invest in the ministry’s mission.
More than a celebration, the evening was a reminder that this story is still unfolding.
Because of faithful supporters, the Wesley Foundation remains a place where students at Tennessee State University find belonging, deepen their faith, and grow into leaders. More than 70 years after its founding, the vision continues to bloom in new and meaningful ways.
