Third Place Ministries was started in 1971 with a small thrift store to serve the needs of our community through a collaborative effort of the United Methodist churches in Marshall County, KY. Our thrift store has been blessed to outgrow its space numerous times through the years and moved into its current location in April of 2022. By accepting donations of used items and reselling them, we divert goods from landfills, reducing waste that can harm the environment. A relationship with God’s creation and a ministry of caring for and healing the earth are integral to what it means to be a United Methodist. Our thrift store has several employees, but also relies on our many volunteers. The proceeds from our New to You store, recycling efforts, and monetary donations are the main sources of income that allow us to offer various support to Marshall County residents, including Utility Assistance, Crisis Counseling, Laundry Ministry, Emergency Assistance, Day 1 Radio Programming, and County-Wide Youth Ministry. Third Place Ministries is sponsored by the United Methodist Churches of Marshall County, but we support, employ, and assist the entire community of Marshall County and beyond. Utility Assistance is restricted to citizens of Marshall County, but we welcome and encourage shoppers and volunteers from all surrounding communities!

Ministries

  • Utility Assistance – Utility Assistance is offered on Tuesday mornings from 9am-Noon. Marshall County residents may receive up to $300 towards their utility bill (electric, water, gas) every 12 months. They must provide a copy of their utility bill and a photo ID. Checks are written directly to the utility company, and assistance is recorded in the CharityTracker system.
  • Laundry Ministry – Located at the iWash in Benton, on the first Sunday of each month, from 1-3pm, we will pay for up to 3 loads of laundry, washed and dried, for Marshall County residents. We also have laundry detergent and dryer sheets available, if needed.
  • Scholarship – We offer a $1000 scholarship each year for Marshall County graduating seniors.
  • Clothing Vouchers – We offer clothing vouchers for adults and children twice a year. These can be administered by either the store manager or the executive director.
  • Household Vouchers – We can offer household vouchers for emergency situations.
  • Radio Programming – We sponsor radio programming on Sunday mornings
    • 9:30 a.m. on WCCK 95.7 FM, located in Calvert City

  • County-Wide Youth Ministry – We sponsor youth activities throughout the year to foster relationships among the Marshall County United Methodist churches and our neighbors.
  • Other – We also collect and donate to other local non-profit entities, such as HOPE Clinic, Humane Society, Mountain Mission, American Cancer Society, homeless missions, and foster care programs.

New To You Shop

The New To You Shop serves as an outreach ministry in western Kentucky by providing a large variety of clothing, housewares, and furniture at a fraction of the cost of other local resale shops. All merchandise that is offered for resale has been donated by a very generous community. Donations are sorted by season, put on hangers, and then sized in the store for the convenience of our shoppers. Donations are tax-deductible and donation receipts are available. A steady flow of volunteers from the community guarantees that we can employ minimal staff.

  • Store Hours: Tuesday thru Friday, 9am-4pm and Saturday, 9am-2pm
  • Donation Times: Tuesday thru Friday, 9am-3:30pm and Saturday, 9am until 1:30pm

Creation Care and Recycling

  • The United Methodist Church encourages creation care and calls us to steward, protect, and defend God’s creation. Recycling is a large part of what we do at New To You, as faithful and diligent stewards of our resources.
  • When we accept donations to sell in our store, these items are kept out of landfills.
  • Damaged items that cannot be sold are stripped of any metals, sorted, and sold for scrap.
  • By partnering with Brook Valley Salvage, we receive money for donations that cannot be resold. These include items that are moldy, broken, stained, or have animal hair.

Third Place Ministries 2025 yearly stats:

  • $69,060.39 in Utility Assistance
  • $24,100 donated for Food Assistance during the SNAP crisis
  • $2,594.64 Laundry Ministry
