Job Description: Director of Music
Type: Part-time, non-exempt
Hours: This year-round position is paid at an hourly rate of $30.00/hour, 10-15 hours per week, with payment made on a bi-weekly basis. 1.5 hours for Sunday morning worship and 1.5 hours for weekly choir rehearsal are designated from the total weekly hours. The remaining time is to be used for practice, music selection and worship planning, choral leadership, and arrangement of special music/guest musicians, etc., and can be done in-person or remotely. Presence and leadership at other special services, such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday, is required.
Reports to: Senior Pastor. All positions are ultimately under the leadership of the Senior Pastor and the Connection Leadership Board (CLB).
Summary: Connection United Methodist Church aims to be an inclusive, God-centered community seeking to embody hospitality and serve authentically. The Director of Music supports this mission by leading the music ministry and worship of Connection UMC. This includes worship planning in partnership with the Senior Pastor, facilitating choir practices, leading the congregation and choir during worship services, and inviting guests to share their musical gifts during worship services. We are seeking a collaborative, thoughtful, and organized music leader who will seek to provide meaningful worship experiences for the congregation.
Responsabilidades:
Music Selection and Performance
● Collaborate with the Senior Pastor in worship development by planning, selecting, and preparing hymns, anthems, special music, offertory, doxology, etc., according to the needs of the worship service.
● Direct the congregation and choir during worship.
● Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment for the congregation and choir during worship services, as well as for special music and guest musicians when required.
● Provide leadership for the church choir by recruiting members, scheduling and leading regular rehearsals, as well as additional rehearsals as needed for special events.
● Arrange regular special music offerings for worship, including using musical gifts present in the congregation, relationships within our community, and other outside musical guests.
● Coordinate and plan vacations and absences to ensure that required services are led appropriately, including identifying and recruiting qualified substitutes to lead worship services and choir practice when needed.
● Organize and maintain the church’s music library, hymn history, and repertory, and manage CCLI reporting.
● Provide oversight for the care of church musical equipment, including an accurate account of piano and organ needs and maintenance, such as regularly scheduled tuning, and communicating with outside technicians and facilities staff when repairs are needed.
● Gain an understanding of the technical systems required for the production of a service, particularly the sound system, and work with the technical team as necessary to produce the bulletin and slides for worship in a timely manner.
● Seek to involve children in worship.
Additional Responsibilities
● May provide music for weddings and funerals. Stipends for these special services will be provided.
Evaluación
● Within the first year of employment, the CLB, in consultation with the Pastor, will conduct a 3-month review.
● After the first year, an annual review will be held to evaluate performance and level of improvement.
Cualificaciones
● Demonstrates a commitment to the vision and spiritual life of the congregation.
● Ability to communicate well and in a friendly manner with the church leadership, the church choir, and members of the congregation.
● Project a positive impression of Connection UMC, and work collaboratively with clergy, choir, staff, and congregation members.
● Ability to play and lead music as needed for church and choir functions. Previous experience in such a role is preferred.
● Fundamental knowledge of the piano, organ, and other instruments that could be used in worship is desired.
● Understanding basic music theory and the ability to perform simple transpositions or reharmonizations.
● Ability to sight-read music as well as chord charts and lead sheets.
● Willingness to rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music.
● Flexibility to play in blended style worship services, incorporating both traditional and modern music.
● General knowledge of The United Methodist Church and familiarity with the United Methodist Hymnal and The Faith We Sing is preferred.
● Ability to arrange and compose choral or instrumental parts as needed.
Working Conditions
● While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be in a church environment. The position is moderately active, and the employee may be required to talk, sing, hear, play music on the piano/organ or other instruments, stand, walk, and/or sit for extended periods. The employee must occasionally lift or move music supplies or other items.
