The General Commission on United Methodist Men (UMM) Selection Committee announces a national search for the next General Secretary and invites inquiries and applications for this position. The General Secretary (GS) serves as the Chief Executive Officer and primary spokesperson for UMM and the top denominational officer of the United Methodist Church’s men’s ministry. UMM seeks an experienced professional with a proven record of leadership. UMM’s next General Secretary will be responsible for shaping the discipleship, mission and leadership of men across the UMC connection, empowering them to grow in Christ and serve his church with boldness and integrity.
The General Commission on United Methodist Men (UMM) is mandated to identify and develop resources that support men’s ministry and to train leaders at all levels of the Church to carry out the Commission’s mission and purpose: to help men know Christ, to grow spiritually, and daily seek his will. UMM provides leadership in men’s discipleship and scouting ministries across the denomination including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire and Big Brother Big Sisters. UMM also partners with other boards and agencies in helping churches live out the vision to form disciples of Jesus Christ who, empowered by the Holy Spirit, love boldly, serve joyfully, and lead courageously in local communities and worldwide connections.
The General Secretary is responsible for providing strategic leadership in order to advance UMM’s ministries, achieve the ministerial and financial goals of UMM, and apply proven business practices to benefit UMM. The person in this role manages the budget, staff, deployed staff and general ministry of UMM as defined by the Book of Discipline. The GS works with bishops, their cabinets, pastors, and laity assisting them to integrate men’s ministry in their area of work and partners to expand the ministry with men and scouting to Central Conferences. The preferred candidate must bring collaborative and decisive leadership to this position, possess a sound understanding of UMM’s mission and values, and possess a solid understanding of UMC polity.
Responsabilidades clave:
• Represents UMM across the connection at men’s ministries and scouting events, with responsibility for inspiring and equipping leaders through teaching, preaching, public speaking, and the development or review of training materials. Also provides leadership and support for retreats, special days, cluster events, and worship services in support of events within Jurisdictions, Annual Conferences, Districts, Local Churches, and if approved Regions.
• Provides strategic leadership in the development, coordination, evaluation, and oversight of UMM’s programs and policies, ensuring alignment with the standards, responsibilities, and requirements outlined in The UMC Book of Discipline. Leads initiatives that advance UMM’s ministerial goals and objectives. Serves as Publisher of UMM Magazine and oversees agency communications across multiple platforms to effectively engage the constituency.
• Serves as UMM’s chief representative in denominational, interagency, affiliate, and ecumenical organizations. Actively participates in meetings, maintains relations, negotiates agreements and works in conjunction with UMC boards, agencies, ecumenical partners, affiliates and endorsed ministries/organizations. Also serves as ex-officio member of the General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA) and the Connectional Table (CT).
• Supports all meetings and committee functions of the Commission alongside other staff including agenda, support materials and reports (annual and quadrennial) budget. Serves as ex-officio member of the Commission Executive Committee and on the Nominating Committee of UMM for the selection of at-large members and officers of UMM.
• Oversees outreach, mission and events sponsored by UMM. Develops mission opportunities for men, works with advocate programs and plans. Coordinates and facilitates the National Gathering of United Methodist Men and follow up for discipleship impact.
• Plans, coordinates and represents Commission on International and Central Conference Ministries and oversees the Disciplinary responsibilities to Central Conferences UMM groups. Participates in International ecumenical men’s organizations, projects, programs, resources and missions as needed.
• Manages financial controls of UMM, including all budgets and financial audits monitoring income and expenses.
• Oversees administrative areas of UMM, ensuring compliance with the Book of Discipline, UMM policies, applicable laws, regulations and industry standards. Manage and direct the work of the staff and deployed staff providing training, orientation and goal setting.
Cualificaciones:
• Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s Degree preferred.
• 5 – 8 years of executive-level leadership with strong management, communication, writing, administrative and supervisory capabilities as well as demonstrated success in overseeing large budgets, interpreting financial impact for ministry, and leading change management initiatives is required.
• Knowledge of The United Methodist Church and its theology, structure, and mission is required. United Methodist Church Membership is required.
• Volunteer or leadership experience in Annual Conference, Jurisdictional, or General Conference strongly preferred
• Ability to think and operate strategically and tactically.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships by exercising courtesy and tact with diverse groups of internal and external contacts.
• Ability and willingness to travel, internationally and domestically, and work weekends or evenings as needed.
• Residence in Nashville, TN area or willingness to relocate is required.
