Skills: The choir/music director should have a working knowledge and ability to apply music
skills. It is imperative that she or he be able to read traditional music notation and be able to pick
out single melodic lines on a piano or keyboard. She or he should be able to sing well enough to
lead congregational singing and demonstrate vocal lines in choir/praise band repertoire. A basic
understanding of healthy vocal production and pedagogy, as well as choral methods are helpful.
The ability to meaningfully communicate between vocal and instrumental musicians is
important. Familiarity with traditional hymns in addition to contemporary worship songs is
necessary.
Spiritual: Most importantly, she/he should have a relationship with Jesus Christ as her/his
personal Savior, and seek to live to the best of her/his ability according to Biblical truth and in
harmony with the stated discipline of Cross Plains United Methodist Church. This is a leadership
position not only regarding music, but also displaying the character and heart of Christ for the
congregation and for people in general.
