Communications Specialist
The mission of Bartlett United Methodist Church is to know Christ and to make Christ known to all people through worship, education, and service, in our community and throughout the world. Position: Communications Specialist
Designation: Full-time, Salaried
Accountability: Senior Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Committee
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Description: The communications specialist will provide leadership and direction in forming the communications strategy of the church. They will create, organize, plan, and implement effective communications to both internal and external audiences, aiding ministry leaders and pastors in identifying and conveying the mission and vision of the church. The specialist will be both a creative and strategic leader, designing and implementing systems and social media platforms to reach across generational lines.
Expectations and Duties:
• Work with church leadership to develop communications processes and define priorities to create a culture in which messages are communicated clearly, creatively, and effectively.
• Define, develop, and effectively communicate messages to community church wide, and specific audiences.
• Solicit information from staff and lay leaders to organize and plan communications.
• Ensure that communication requests remain on time and on budget.
• Create and implement strategies for becoming more visible in our community.
• Serve as the creator/editor of all things print and electronic, maintaining clear communication, brand presence, and consistency. This includes worship bulletins, monthly newsletters, e-news, promotions, reports, and other requests.
• Oversee the updating and maintenance of the church website and social media accounts. Design and integrate online registration for church events.
• Remain current on creative, communication, and technical trends, and seek opportunities to sharpen skills for effective communication.
• Assist with the oversight of maintenance and care of equipment and software in this ministry area. Make suggestions as needed.
• Support the daily operations of the church by answering phones and assisting visitors.
• Maintain the church membership database and church-wide calendar of events.
Attributes and Skills:
• Spiritual gifts helpful to this work include servanthood, encouragement, helping, leadership, and administration.
• The specialist must have a strong Christian character and spiritual grounding, as well as a theological alignment with the church’s mission.
• Strong organizational, promotional, and interpersonal skills. They must work within the context of the larger church, not only in communication but also in ministry and budget.
• A working knowledge of multiple program areas and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks are essential to success in this role.
• Recognition that communication is a major platform for the church in the community, as such maintaining a positive role and reputation for the church in the community.
• Create high-quality communications that touch all age groups and constituencies.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, and Publisher.
Education and Training:
• Required: high school diploma or GED and 4 years of appropriate experience.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field. Experience in directing communications ministries.
• The specialist may or may not need formal training to do this work effectively; however, participating in continuing education is strongly recommended. Consultations with the church’s clergy or SPRC can help to locate opportunities that match training needs.
