JOB DESCRIPTION for DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES
OBJECTIVE:
To plan, develop, and implement programs for all Youth and Children (k-12 grade) at Lewisburg First and the surrounding community, that encourages them to become disciples of Jesus Christ. It is our goal that each youth experiences the love and grace of God, that encourages growth in the practice of faith and understanding of scripture so that they are equipped to be faithful disciples while in school and beyond.
REPORTS TO: This position reports to the Pastor and is accountable to the Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee of Lewisburg First UMC.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate for this full-time role will be a reliable, strong communicator who keeps parents, students and the congregation informed and engaged. Growing the youth program is the chief priority- building meaningful relationships with students, parents and community partners.
- Must be a fully committed follower of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Must be able to work as a team member with other Lewisburg First UMC staff.
- Be able to develop teams of congregation members to further Children Ministries and Youth Ministries at Lewisburg First UMC.
- Be a person of good integrity.
- Have a good understanding of, and be able to articulate, the teachings of Scripture and Wesleyan tradition.
- Have a college degree or similar experience
- Prefer candidates who have 2 years of experience working in youth ministry in a local church and a good knowledge of children and youth development.
- Effective written and spoken communication skills as well as organizational and leadership skills.
- Proficiency with social media and other technology necessary for children and youth ministries.
- Must be at least 23 years of age to comply with our Safe Sanctuaries Policy and Procedures. The person selected must complete Safe Sanctuary Training and Boundaries and Sexual Ethics Training provided by the TN Annual Conference within the first month (courses are available online).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Pray for the children and youth of Lewisburg First UMC and their families.
- Teach and lead students in Christ-centered spiritual formation and help understand and embody the unique doctrine and practices of Methodism, disciple youth in evangelism and ministry opportunities, such as volunteer opportunities in the church, service opportunities in the community, and mission trips.
- Lead a mid-week youth program and Sunday School children’s lesson.
- Provide a safe place for students to explore their questions and share their challenges in faith and in life.
- Build relationships with the students and their families to understand the individual and collective needs of the children and youth at Lewisburg First UMC and in the Lewisburg community. Develop a loving and supportive community where students and parents can have fun, be encouraged and share spiritual experiences.
- Be responsible for the recruitment of Sunday school teachers for children and youth classes and teach Sunday school when necessary.
- Plan curriculum for Bible studies, small groups, and mission projects.
- Work with the Pastor as needed regarding Confirmation.
- Communicate regularly with parents and youth about youth and children ministries at Lewisburg First UMC through (but not limited to) social media, newsletter, bulletins, calendars, and other appropriate means.
- Ensure that all youth and children programs of Lewisburg First UMC are conducted in an environment fully compliant with Lewisburg First UMC Safe Sanctuary Policy & Procedures.
- Lead the Youth and Children Ministry Teams. These teams support the Director of Children and Youth Ministries in developing, planning, and implementing youth and children ministries at Lewisburg First UMC.
- Prepare annual budgets for youth and children ministries at Lewisburg First UMC for submission to the Finance Committee during the annual budgeting process.
- Secure approval of the Pastor, Finance Chair and Administrative Council for any un-budgeted expenditures prior to committing to the purchase.
- Communicate all issues and concerns to the Pastor in a timely manner.
- Other short term duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 40 hours / week
- Attend Worship Services at Lewisburg First UMC and assist in worship as needed
- Attend all staff meetings
- Oversee all youth and children’s functions/events at Lewisburg First UMC
- Meet with Pastor as requested
- Be available to parents and youth
- Background Check with acceptable results
HOW THIS POSITION IS EVALUATED:
- The Director of Children and Youth Ministries will receive a semi-annual evaluation from the Pastor and the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
- The Pastor may also give feedback as deemed necessary.
