Job Title: Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry
Summary: The Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will work collaboratively with laity, staff , and church leadership to nurture a dynamic, Christ-centered ministry that engages youth (sixth grade through 12th grade) and young adults (high school graduates through mid-twenties) in spiritual growth, community-building, and active participation in the life of the church. The Director will provide strategic leadership, program development, pastoral care, and hands-on implementation of a comprehensive ministry that reflects the values and vision of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

Position Responsibilities:
Program Development and Implementation:
● Design and plan the scope of all young people’s activities for an effective, year-round ministry, including managing the ministry’s budget. Provide Spiritual direction for the young people, planning worship and mission opportunities and experiences.
● Recruit members and provide leadership for the Youth Advisory Team including youth, parents, and other stakeholders to plan and advise on programming and vision for future ministry opportunities as well as evaluate past programs.
● Plan, implement, participate in, and lead youth and young adult trips and retreats.
● Coordinate Confirmation Classes and lead along with Pastor annually or bi-annually based on need. Recruit facilitators and teachers to lead.
● Maintain and improve youth space (currently 3rd floor). Create a warm and welcoming environment for young people.

Pastoral Care and Mentoring:
● Provide counseling for youth, their parents, and young adults as needed to the best of your ability, referring them to professional counselors when needed especially in crisis.
● Build meaningful relationships with youth and their families, serving as a trusted mentor and role model. Connect with disengaged and new youth and young adults.
● Attend student functions and school events. Grow relationships with the local school community especially University Middle and High School.
● Foster a safe and inclusive environment where youth feel valued, respected, and supported in their faith journey.

Teaching and Spiritual Formation:
● Teach or secure teachers and supplies/curriculum for all youth and young adult activities.
● Facilitate and/or lead all programming for youth and young adults to grow young people in their faith.
● Recruit and train needed volunteers to serve as teachers, counselors and chaperones. Ensure training for Safe Sanctuaries in addition to skill development and knowledge building.

Leadership Development:
● Identify and nurture the leadership potential of youth and young adults within the congregation.
● Provide opportunities for youth and young adults to take on leadership roles within the program and the broader church community.
● Off er training, support, and mentorship to youth and young adult leaders, empowering them to make a positive impact in their church and beyond.

Collaboration and Communication:
● Communicate the needs and experiences of the ministry by attending Staff meetings, Church Council meetings, Program Planning Committee meetings, Safe Sanctuaries Board meetings and other necessary gatherings.
● Maintain clear and effective lines of communication with youth, their parents, and the young adults through weekly email, text messages, mailings, and in-person updates.
● Provide Director of Communications information for bulletin announcements, newsletter articles, and website updates.
● Develop a social media strategy that increases ministry visibility, engagement, and digital discipleship – Utilizing platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and others for storytelling, invitations, and celebration.

Congregational and Community Involvement:
● Foster integration of youth and young adults into the larger life of the church through worship participation, intergenerational events, and service opportunities.
● Build relationships with local schools (especially University Middle and High School), colleges, and community organizations to expand outreach and support for youth and young adults.
● Collaborate with the University of Memphis Wesley Foundation to strengthen young adult ministry and create meaningful connections between groups.

Education and Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree in a related fi eld or appropriate experience (Master’s preferred).
● Strong and authentic Christian faith with a commitment to the United Methodist tradition (or ecumenical openness).
● Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
● Proficiency with social media platforms, digital communication tools, and event planning.
Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week) Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule with regular office hours (Monday-Thursday) and Sunday attendance. Night and weekend activities are included in responsibilities. Weekly hours will be divided between the office, youth events, and young adult events.
Reporting Line and Policy Compliance: The Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will report to the Pastor. He/she will practice diligence in adhering to/assuring compliance with the church’s Safe Sanctuaries Policy at all times.
