Job Overview
The Director of Music oversees the incorporation of music, in the traditional and contemporary styles of corporate worship of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church working closely with the Senior Pastor to ensure that the music aligns with the overall worship theme and message.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and other worship leaders to create a cohesive and meaningful worship experience that reflects the theological and spiritual goals of the congregation through music.
- Oversee copyright compliance by church administrative personnel, including ensuring copyright licenses are renewed annually.
- Oversee music resources. Resources includes a mix of music (soloists, duets, trios and quartets, instrumental and keyboard, choral) as well as genres (hymns and arrangements, gospel songs (traditional and contemporary, anthems, spirituals) for all worship services, rites and
- other services of the church.
- Play and/or coordinate musical selections for the rites of Holy Union or Holy Matrimony; the rites of Funeral or Memorial Services; and all other services recognized by the church that the music ministry is called upon to provide with input as needed from, Senior Pastor, Worship Chair and Musicians.
- Schedule, prepare, and direct weekly and special rehearsals with Mass choir and oversee all additional choirs with assistance from Musicians to direct/guide other choirs (i.e. Men’s Chorus and if needed the Children/Youth Choir) and works with Choir President and other officers for regular communication to all members.
- Creatively/organize and plan concerts, cantatas or other music related programs that are in line with the liturgical calendar of the United Methodist Church with input from and in collaboration with, Senior Pastor, Musicians, and Worship Chair.
- Play (piano, organ, keyboard) and provide music for the entire worship service (and transitions) with all musicians and choirs to include the Morning Hymn, Choir Selection(s) and Sermonic Selection, Communion Selections, Invitation Music, Offertory Selection, Benediction Selection, Right Hand of Fellowship Selection (when needed).
- Teach vocal parts and direct choirs during services and rehearsals.
- Collaborate with the senior pastor and other worship leaders to create a cohesive and meaningful worship experience that reflects the theological and spiritual goals of the congregation.
- Attend worship meetings and implement and/or suggest changes and requests for the music program.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Minimum of 3 years of musical experience and/or formal music training (organ, piano, voice); a strong knowledge of various musical instruments, worship styles, and genres of religious music.
- Ability to read notated music, play (organ, piano, keyboard) by ear and/or sight-read music preferred.
- Must be able to teach, play (on the piano), and conduct a variety of different sacred music styles (hymns and arrangements, gospel songs (traditional and contemporary, anthems, spirituals) that connect with a diverse congregation and are consistent with the vision, mission, and worship experiences of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church.
- Strong leadership skills (planning, execution, time management, team player), including and interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills for the growth and development, direction, and management of the Music Ministry.
- Mature, enthusiastic, dedicated and growing Christian who can humbly receive counsel and constructive advice and serve as a role model to musicians and choir members of Gordon Memorial’s intergenerational music ministry with a commitment to serve.
- Demonstrated leadership in church music ministry.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Associate degree or bachelor’s degree recommended.
- Three (or more) years of experience training, conducting, and leading a volunteer church music ministry.
Direct Reports
Supervise and develop all (volunteer) directors of choirs.
