Director of Youth, Children, and Family Ministries
St. John’s United Methodist Church, located in midtown Memphis, has an immediate opportunity for Director of Family Ministries. This position reports to our Senior/Lead Pastor, with accountability to the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
St. John’s is a diverse community of Christians. Our urban setting allows us to practice our faith actively, by offering help and support to those around us through our food ministries, recovery ministries, and community partnerships which provide healthcare, legal services, and other forms of assistance.
Qualifications
Committed Christian, preferably United Methodist, with a proven track record of engaging young people and developing disciples
Must embrace St. John’s core values of inclusivity and commitment to Reconciling Ministries.
College degree in Christian Education/Faith Formation or the equivalent preferred
Seminary training desired
Must successfully pass background check required by Safe Sanctuary policy
Valid driver’s license
Responsibilities
- Create a culture where children and youth feel welcomed, valued, understood, and excited about developing their relationships with God.
- Cast a vision for faith formation for children and youth
- Assure compliance with Safe Sanctuary policy, providing updates and training for church members as needed. Serve as lead staff person for all Safe Sanctuary needs including facilitating background checks for all adult leaders.
- Effectively and regularly communicate, through all channels, with parents, volunteers, staff, and the congregation
- Equip parents to participate in age-appropriate faith formation at home
- Commit to and cultivate relationships across generations and outside the church; recruit, train, and manage volunteers to assist with programming for youth and children
- Work with Lead Pastor on youth and children’s inclusion in Sunday morning service; Equip children and youth to be worship leaders; train and schedule acolytes.
- Regularly participate in worship planning and services with Senior/Lead Pastor.
- Serve as staff resource to the Chairperson for the Youth and Children Committee
- Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly Council meetings, and continuing education opportunities
- Develop and manage a budget for each ministry area
Focus on youth
- Create a culture where youth want to come to St. John’s and bring their friends
- Plan and resource Sunday School, United Methodist Youth, Confirmation, camp/retreats, service/mission projects, and other age-appropriate and faith-forming activities
- Participate in connectional youth ministries and programming at the District and Conference level, specifically Next Gen Youth Ministries
- Facilitate fundraising efforts for Youth opportunities
- Attend youth school functions and celebrations
Focus on children
- Partnering with the Chair for Youth & Children Committee, coordinate, and secure volunteers to deliver comprehensive, age-appropriate, and faith-forming programs for children, including but not limited to Sunday School, Parent’s Night Out, camp/retreats, and Vacation Bible School
