The Giving Garden Internship
Purpose: To encourage a young person to serve, learn, grow, share and enjoy the Giving Garden
experience.

Goal: To provide, through internship at the Giving Garden, a platform to cultivate a young person’s
passion to volunteer and serve within a community giving garden mission.

Objective: To teach a young person what, where, when, how and why we do everything at the garden to
enable us to “feed the hungry”.

To encourage a young person to understand and embrace the Giving Garden values and
interact with other volunteers and day leaders to learn and enjoy the gift of new relationships
and experiences.

To provide an experience that will stay with and enrich the life of the Giving Garden intern.

Work Schedule and Expectations

  • Part time position, Mid-May or June through August, total of 12 to 15 weeks
  • High school Junior or Senior or undergraduate college age
  • Average 20 hours per week; variable due to outdoor environment/weather
  • Mostly morning activities and work due to summer temperatures
  • $13.00 per hour
  • Reports to a Giving Garden board member and the Pastor leading FFUMC Missions (as the Staff
    person)
  • Daily supervision by the Giving Garden leader of the day
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to and from the garden
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment, lift 40 pounds, and move freely about the grounds
  • Weekly reviews with intern’s Giving Garden managing board member

 

Description and Responsibilities

  • Ongoing activities may include
    • Planting
    • Weeding
    • Harvesting
    • Special Projects
  • Keep an ongoing journal of activities, hours worked, learnings and questions intern might have
  • Intern may work alongside Day leaders in the following areas of the Giving Garden
    • Welcome Center / Greeters
    • Green House
    • Hoop Houses
    • Flower and Herb Garden
    • Field One
    • Fields 2, 3, 4 and 5
    • Gods Little Acre (our children’s teaching garden)
    • Horse Barn / Sorting, Processing and Distribution
    • Giving Garden on the Go
  • Participate in opportunities to learn more about the processes of the Garden that may include:
    • Soil Management and Preparation
    • Weeding
    • Growing from Seed
    • Field Growing Processes
    • Hoop House Processes
    • Environmentally Healthier Growing Methods
    • Harvest, Sorting and Distribution
    • Water Conservation
    • The Giving Garden Partners
    • Crop Rotation Practices
    • Cover Crops

Prohibited Activities

To ensure the safety of our Giving Garden intern the following activities are strictly prohibited and we ask that interns “ask a leader before proceeding” if clarification is needed.
• Working on or near heavy machinery
• No climbing ladders
• No use of dangerous tools (cut or puncture hazards)
• No heavy lifting
• No use of harsh chemicals
